On our recent visit to King’s Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, our kids participated in the Junior Ranger program. Junior Rangers are the National Park Service’s special program for kids (and the young at heart) to help preseve each park they visit. The activity booklet is actually a bound color book and is the same one used for Sequoia and King’s Canyon National Parks.
This is for ages 5-adult according to their cover page. Kids do activities based on their age group – Jay (5-8 years old); Raven (9-12 years old); Arrowhead(13 and up). The activities are designated for each age group’s animal symbol. Activities included scavenger hunt (my kids favorite), rock finding, identifying activities that you should or shouldn’t do within the park, answering trail questions. There is an emphasis on learning about black bears since many of them live in Sequoia and King’s Canyon National parks.
In addition to completing their respective activities, they must also collect a plastic bag of litter or a bag of recyclable items (plastics, cans, bottles) found on the trails. We didn’t find any litter on the trails so that was a good thing and the rangers let that one go. Our kids happily recited their pledge with the ranger and proudly wore their Junior Ranger badge to add to their collection.
